An evening at Kovalam Beach

I was in Thiruvananthapuram to attend a family wedding last week. The visit was tightly packed with most time taken up by the wedding festivities. A narrow 2 hour window on the final day opened up and we opted to visit the Kovalam beach.

Kovalam Lighthouse beach

Kovalam is a beach town, located just 14km from the city center of Thiruvananthapuram. There are 3 prominent beaches in Kovalam – the Hawa beach, Samudra beach and Lighthouse beach. The lighthouse beach is the largest among the 3 beaches and also the most sought after beach in Kovalam. A 30 meter lighthouse sits on the southern edge of the beach on a small hill-rise.

While my family opted to experience some adventure activities on the beach (speed boat rides), I chose to walk along the beach,  with the camera in my hands. The sea was a bit rough and most of the rocky stretches were cordoned off by the life guards at the beach. As the sun made its journey down in the skies, I wandered up and down a sandy stretch.

The lashing waves brought with them many sea shells and some of those which got left behind the receding waves got embedded in the sand and subsequent waves left interesting patterns on the sand due to these tiny obstacles.

It was here that I had a  chance conversation with an elderly Bangalorean for a while. It ended in a pleasant revelation that the said gentleman was actually an ex police chief of Bangalore (30 years ago – SNS Murthy). Finally it was time to head back – people had trains/flights to catch. A parting image before I started back.
