Kalapathar beach is an east-facing beach in the Havelock Island in South Andaman. The beach is situated in the south eastern part of the island. Knowing that the island is a small one – just two major roads (13kms and 11kms respectively) – I’d rented a scooter for myself to explore the island at my own pace. Also having the luxury of time, I made a total of 3 visits to this beach.
An evening I spent there, was cloudy and gloomy. Going by the name Kalapathar – which means black rocks – I’d expected to find just that on the beach. I later found that the name is drawn from the name of a village nearby. But at that time, I’d thought, the beach could very well be called Harapathar beach – the rocks lining the beach were covered with moss and were strikingly green.

We got a glimpse of some glorious sunset colours in the western skies, of which we were only privy to a small part.

The following morning, I had hoped to catch the sunrise. But, I goofed up and was late. But I noticed that the water had receded quite a bit – a low tide – and more of the moss covered rocks were now visible.

I made a visit again the next morning. But I concentrated more on the life on the road adjoining the beach – near the village of Kalapathar. More on that in another post. To end this post, I leave you with a very minimalistic image – just a boat out in the open sea.
