Gundamgere lake on new year’s eve (2017)

The date was 31st Dec 2016 – new year’s eve. I negotiate heavy traffic on the narrow highway in the city’s northern outskirts. People seem to be lining up at every bakery, wine outlet and a few resorts that dot the stretch of the highway – celebratory mood is visibly high to usher in the new year. Everyone seem to be congregating in groups and crowds to start parties, both small and big. But we were headed to low key place where we can quietly spend time doing what we love most – photographing the last sunset of 2016 by Gundamgere lake.

Google maps pegs Gundamgere lake at about 70KMs from Bangalore, though it said it’d take a little more than 2 hours to reach. I had wondered why it’d take that long – the heavy traffic beyond Yelahanka, till Doddaballapur is the culprit – the ongoing road work didn’t help either. The last few kilometers to the lake, however, is blessed with nice roads, very sparse traffic and pleasing surroundings. A small village is situated close to the lake. We’re greeted by mildly curious onlookers near the lake. A careful drive on the narrow lake bund gets us to the north-eastern edge of the lake, which positioned us in a perfect orientation for the sunset. At this point, the well-known Makalidurga hill lies behind us.

Here are a few images that we got:

There were small uncultivated fields a little distance away from the lake. In my mind’s eye, I could see a very nice composition with the rough-ploughed lines on the field lead the eye to the lake beyond and eventually the hills and the golden skies in the distance. But, I could not translate this mental image to a photo outcome very well.

A short timelapse that I got, by letting the GoPro capture the entire duration we spent there.

What did you think of the way we spent our new year’s eve? What did you do on new year’s eve? Post it in the comments. And wish you all a very happy new year 2017. Cheers.
